For the last few weeks at Wellington Landings Middle School we’ve been stressing the importance of drills and have been doing many Code Red drills. This is because of what could possibly happen in and to our school. In the past, people have brought firearms and weapons to schools and many schools have not had a well thought out plan of action for this horrifying event. In the event of a Code Red, you are to find a safe place to hide and make absolutely no noise. This is because we want it to seem like there is no one in the school. This will give the shooter or attacker no idea where the people are and give us more of a chance to survive. We are also directed to evacuate if we hear gunshots out to the woods to keep us out of even more danger. We also do fire drills to make sure we can evacuate the school in a fire and Code Yellow drills if there is a suspicious person on campus although we are allowed to talk and do our work without exiting classrooms. Many other codes are done in school in case of many examples of emergency that are not done as drills. Although some emergency procedures are not drills without the drills we have many people could be very injured in situations like a fire or shooting. Without these drills, we would not know what to do in an emergency situation and could get very hurt. In the case of a Code Red with a person with firearms, people could even die without these drills. Many years ago schools didn’t have to worry about having drills because of crazy people with weapons. It was not a thing to shoot up schools and carry firearms. Today people get crazy ideas into their heads and shoot children in their place of learning for no good reason. The idea of drills has changed over the years but are still very important. Many children think of drills as a silly thing we do but the real situation couldn’t actually happen. In this day and age anything can happen, just look at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Without these drills, we could die in that sort of situation. We can’t think of drills as silly because they are anything but. If we fool around in a Code Red in the real thing we could get very injured. It is very important to think of drills as if it were the real thing.
