Gas prices are at an all-time high currently, and there is no shortage of media complaints about it. Many are blaming the gas prices on Biden, however, gas prices, even if domestic, are not in control of the United States president.
Everywhere in the world right now is having an issue with gas prices. For example, Norway’s gas prices, if converted into American dollars, are just below $9 a gallon. Furthermore, gas prices have been on the rise in many places since mid-2021, during Trump’s presidency.
The reason for the slower rise in gas prices is a market shortage. This means, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of gas decreased significantly. The recent slow end to the pandemic has caused many people to need fuel at once, which had not been occurring for a while.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has also been a factor in the recent surge in gas prices. Both Russia and Ukraine export oil; Russia being one of the biggest oil exporters globally. While a majority of Russia’s oil does not go to the U.S., it is important to remember gas prices are a global issue. It is also important to consider inflation, as it is a reason the numbers may look so high. $5 today is much less than $5 a few years ago.
In reality, our high gas prices are a result of the free market. Due to our non-socialist government, there is very little our government can do about it. The leaders are doing all they can do, such as asking companies to produce more oil (many refuse).
It is also a good time to analyze why the United States has been so damaged by gas prices. The rest of the world is dealing with the same issue, but our country is the one doing the most complaining. In the United States, there is a significant lack of public transportation in areas with a less dense population. White in many other developed countries there are always alternatives to driving yourself. There are trains, buses, and in some places, it is designed to walk or bike. This is not the case in America. Our entire transportation system is built on the expectation of everyone driving themselves. It is shameful or unheard of to use public transportation, whereas in many other countries it is normal. The complaints mostly come from the U.S. because of the reliance on gas to be able to travel.
