Nearly a year has passed since Sila’s mother journeyed to Turkey from the United States, expecting to obtain the immigration documents necessary for her to be able to visit her family in the country.

Sila finds it difficult to tolerate the continuous separation. But everything changes when Sila goes outside their Oregon town with her mechanic father to fix a truck. She encounters an old man who recently won the state lottery there, hidden behind a huge stone wall. A circus elephant named Veda is saved thanks to their newfound partnership, and they later become friends with a strange youngster named Mateo, demonstrating that solace and hope can be found in the unlikeliest of places.
