A rarely seen deep sea fish found in California by a group of scientists is to be resembled as a serpent.
This unknown creature was found dead floating on the ocean surface off the San Diego coast and was brought ashore for study, marine experts said.
The silvery, 12-foot-long oarfish was located by La Jolla Cove which is north of downtown San Diego on the 3rd and 4th of August, 2024 by a study group of snorkelers and kayakers.
According to institution fish expert Ben Frable, it’s only the 20th time a rare oarfish is known to have washed up in California since 1901.
Another scientist by the name of Scripps, noted that oarfish have a mythical reputation for causing earthquakes and other natural disasters, although no studies have proven this.
Swimmers brought the La Jolla Cove oarfish to shore atop a paddleboard. It was then transferred to the bed of a pickup truck.
Scientists from NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center and Scripps planned a necropsy on Friday to try to determine the cause of death and if the unknown creature is truly an oarfish.
