On the beaches of New Zealand, Scientists found fossils of a 50 million-year-old flightless bird, which they named Kumimanu fordycei, which people call the Giant Penguin. The Giant Penguin was estimated to be about 1.6 meters or 5 feet 3 inches. Normal Penguins are about 3.5 feet and their weight ranges from 2 pounds to 88 pounds with emperor penguins being an average height of 45 inches tall and weighing around 88 pounds.
The Giant Penguin was not the only penguin fossil found on the beaches of New Zealand. Petradyptes Stonehousei is what they call the other penguin species found. These penguins were estimated to be about 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighed about 110 pounds. The Giant Penguin fossil was found from 2016 to 2017. The Petradyptes Stonehousei was discovered at the same time as the Giant Penguin.
