October 7, 2024, Hurricane Milton strengthened to a Category 5 in a matter of hours. This monster storm could be the most powerful hurricane of the century.
Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 on the west coast of Florida, near Sarasota. The storm just barely missed Tampa, whose residents were preparing for the worst. Although the hurricane plowed through central Florida, there were disastrous effects on other parts of the state.
A wake of destruction followed the tornados that Milton formed. There were at least 38 of them that were caused by this storm. These twisters tore up houses and other buildings, as well as picking up cars and knocking down power lines.
Milton knocked out the power for over 3 million people. Some people were without power for nearly an entire week or more. That means no air conditioning, refrigeration, or light – that is, unless you have a generator.
Luckily, some neighborhoods had people helping one another by offering shelter, generator power, and food. Others volunteered to help clear the debris from the roads and houses. Sometimes the best of people come out during the worst of times.
