Finland Zoo is sending 2 giant pandas back to China for expense purposes and breeding purposes. The pandas, known as Lumi and Pyry, are female and male giant pandas. They came to the Finland Zoo in 2018 with a 15 year loan.
When the two pandas arrived about 280,000 came to see them that year, which is double the amount of usual visitors there are. As the Covid 19 Pandemic hit, the amount of visitors declined severely due to quarantine. The Zoo thought the population of visitors would increase if the pandas would breed and have a cub but unfortunately the pandas would not breed.
Both of the pandas summed up to an extremely pricy income due to cost of bamboo, upkeep, and building a “Panda House”. So unfortunately the Zoo had little to no choice but to return the Giant Pandas. The pandas will be missed by Finland and all of the Zoo staff but they certainly will enjoy their time in China and be back in their home town.
