On Wednesday, 43 monkeys escaped from a research facility in South Carolina. At the time of this writing, 13 monkeys are still missing.
The monkeys escaped because a new worker did not lock the cage properly. Thankfully, the local police chief talked to the news and said, “They are not infected with any disease whatsoever. They are harmless and a little skittish,” Yemassee Police Chief Gregory Alexander said Thursday morning.
Even though the monkeys pose no threat to society, people are advised to stay away from them, and not make any loud, or sudden movements, as this scares the monkeys.
This specific species of monkey (Rhesus Macaques) is known for traveling in groups and is very social. They were even seen cooing at other monkeys in cages!
All the monkeys that escaped were females, and thankfully, too young to be experimented on.
