Florida golfer Jason Horschel, who played for the Florida Gators, was able to handle a gator on PGA National’s sixth hole in Round 1 of the Cognizant Classic.
Horschel used a 60-degree wedge to poke at the gator, causing it to retreat back to the water. He explained that gators are more afraid of humans, only coming after them during mating season and when they have eggs.
Horschel’s actions were not surprising, as he had a history of handling wildlife on courses in the Sunshine State.
Horschel’s actions were part of his day in wildlife terms, including four birdies, one eagle, and one gator.
He shot a 5-under 66, finishing seven shots behind early leader Jake Knapp after his round of 59.
Horschel grew up with his dad grabbing the tail of gators and shooting them back in the water, which he never touched with his hand. Unlike some people, he believes that gators are more afraid of humans, and they are generally fine when they have eggs.
Horschel’s actions demonstrate his ability to handle wildlife on the golf course.
