After years of disputes about how the sport is run, it is set to be on the program for 2028. International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said on the 17th, that the executive board he chairs approved including boxing in the 2028 program.
Currently, it still needs around 100 members to sign off on this decision, but this is usually considered a formality. Last month, the IOC recognized a new governing body called World Boxing. The new boxing body of the IOC now has a membership of more than 80 national federations though Russia, Spain, and multiple African countries are some of those that have not yet signed up.
On Monday, the IOC indicated that national boxing bodies would still be given time to switch over their allegiance before the next qualification begins.
