The NBA, or the National Basketball Association, is a 77-year-old association, created back in August of 1949. In June of 1946, Walter Brown, a gardener in Boston, realized that major ice hockey rinks could also be used to host basketball games.
He established the Basketball Association of America, or the BAA, which was later merged with the National Basketball League, also called the NBL, to create the NBA on August 3, 1949. They later expanded even further when they merged with the American Basketball Association.
Today, the NBA is one of America’s and Canada’s most major sports leagues and is also considered the best basketball league internationally.
Their regular season runs from October to April, with play-offs extending to June. So far the Celtics and the Lakers are both tied as the best team in the NBA, with 17 wins both.
The NBA has always been an influential organization and its creation has helped spread the culture of basketball to many people all over America, and helped inspire many young kids and adults to take the same route.
