During the school day, kids often have little periods of free time such as lunch, before classes start, and during class while their teachers work on important things. While they have these free periods, students should be able to use their phones. Being able to use their phones can allow students to connect with their friends or even new people. 

Allowing students to use their phones after completing classwork can encourage students to finish their work in a timely manner. Not only that, but phones can be useful in emergencies. It allows students to contact their parents faster if they don’t feel safe, or if they don’t have a trusted adult on campus. It can make them feel more comfortable instead of being forced to talk to their parents in the front office, right in front of administrators

In reality, kids will always try to sneak their phones into school and use them. Instead of giving students detentions, schools should let them use them under guidelines and rules.
