South American farms, Dean and Deon Barnard, owners of Oppie Plaas Boerdery Farm, recently discovered the world’s heaviest plum.
On March 27, 2024, farmer Dean Barnard found the world’s heaviest plum weighing 16.73 ounces (464.15 grams). This plum, roughly the same size as a softball, has claimed the new spot as the world’s heaviest plum. This plum has surpassed the previous record holder found in Japan in 2021, by 3.8 oz.
These farmers own 17.3 acres of commercial plum orchards. When first harvested, the plum weighed 480 g, but it lost a few due to a loss of moisture in the plum. Dean and Deon Barnard first joined the plum industry eight years ago, previously having minimal knowledge or expertise. They also found a couple of other record breakers among this year’s harvest ranging between 400-450 g.
