The Denver Broncos stretched their winning streak to nine games with a thrilling 27-26 overtime victory against the Washington Commanders on Sunday night, but their escape was significantly aided by three questionable calls and one non-call by the officials in the game’s final minutes.
According to APNews, the Commanders’ final drive in regulation was derailed by the officiating. First, in the fourth quarter, Commanders QB Marcus Mariota was tripped by Broncos edge rusher Dondrea Tillman, which should have been a 15-yard penalty on Denver. The non-call resulted in Washington facing a punting situation instead of a first down. Later, on the drive that tied the game, Washington receiver Terry McLaurin was flagged for a “phantom false start” that stumped NBC’s broadcast crew, pushing them back. The most egregious call came when Mariota was incorrectly flagged for intentional grounding on a throw outside the numbers, costing Washington 10 yards and a crucial 10-second run-off.
Despite the hurdles, Washington tied the game to force overtime. Broncos’ defense was gassed, but Commanders coach Dan Quinn surprisingly chose to kick off, allowing Denver to score first. While Washington answered with a touchdown, edge rusher Nik Bonitto batted down the two-point conversion to secure the Broncos’ ninth straight win, all of which have been dramatic comebacks. Though the Broncos dismiss luck, the timely calls played a critical role in preserving their streak.
