Oksana Masters headlines a rare group of athletes competing in both the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, continuing to redefine versatility on the world stage. The most decorated American Winter Paralympian, Masters, has earned 14 Winter medals, including five golds, and five Summer medals, four of them gold. She is preparing for her eighth Paralympics.
According to AP News, about 120 athletes over the past two decades have competed in both seasonal Games. Masters competes in Para cross-country skiing and biathlon in winter, and Para cycling and rowing in summer — switching training focus every two years.
The transition is demanding. Masters says shifting between sports requires rebuilding strength and adapting to different muscle groups, with little offseason for recovery. Equipment costs add financial pressure, with specialized gear often funded personally.
Other dual-season athletes expected at Milan Cortina include Aaron Pike, Kendall Gretsch, and Andrea Eskau.
