These words are based on phrases that people say but made up before it became official which Oxford makes it. They add new words every year some of the past one where. 2023 was rizz, 2024 brain rot and this year’s 2025 new word of the year was ragebait.
Ragebait is a word that is used to mean Online content designed to deliberately upset or anger the reader, often to drive engagement. People will get someone mad and say you are rage-baiting them to make them feel anger. The way Oxford picks its word of the year by analyzing millions of words from its corpus to identify new or newly prominent words and expressions with cultural significance.Â
The words that were considered but not chosen were aura farming, biohack and vibe coding. In the end they decided to choose rage bait as the word of the year. With many new phrase people are saying there could be a crazy word next year.
