Recently this year many proposals have been made to ban social media for kids under 16 to be banned from social media. This would include many popular platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.

Banning these platforms for teens would have a massive impact on the teens and the platforms. The news site “OBERLO” did a recent survey in August of 2023 and found that 12.7% of all social media users are aged 13 – 19. The proposals aren’t for 19 and under but rather for 16 and under. Assuming ages 13 – 16 and ages 17 – 19 using social media is about fifty about 6.35% of all social media users are under 16. This would have a major impact on the companies losing over 6% of their entire audience.

One thing that some adults don’t understand is why we enjoy social media. This is because many of these platforms are fairly new being founded in the late 2000s and early 2010’s except Tik Tok being created in 2016. It is now easier than ever to communicate with our friends using social media whether it’s by using videos or messages.
