Dry, cracked ground mid drought

On Monday, October 16, 2023, a major river port in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil hit its lowest point in 121 years as a historic drought damaged the ecosystem.

The water level reached 13.59 meters which is the lowest it has ever been since records started in 1902. According to the civil defense agency in the state of Amazonas, the drought has affected around 481,000 people.

Brazil’s Science Ministry expects the drought will last until at least December. Late last week, some workers from Brazilian NGO Fundacao Amazonia Sustentavel went out to the parched region to deliver food and supplies to villages in need. The drought has threatened their access to important needs such as food, water, and medicine.

Some of the people living in the areas affected by the drought are worried about what is in the water from the local supply. Some kids are getting sick from the water that they are drinking as the drought has affected major parts of their lives.
